Page 3, column threeHARRY ODEL HESTON
Harry Odel Heston, son of William and Nancy Heston, was born in Mechanicsville, Iowa, on August 31, 1890, and died at his home in Elgin on Saturday morning, February 27, 1937, aged forty-six years, five months and twenty-six days.
His father died when he was yet a small boy, therefore his early years were spent in his mother’s home and in the home of his uncle, L. Heston, an only brother of his father. He received his early religious training through the various services of the Presbyterian Church of which his mother was a regular attendant. He was graduated from the Mechanicsville high school and the Cedar Rapids Business College.
After growing to manhood for a period of eight years he was employed as a traveling salesman for the Marshall Oil Company and during that time had his residence in Decorah.
On August 24, 1922, he was united in marriage to Clara Marie Holzer, … (paper creased making it unreadable) marriage they came to Elgin to live where they have since resided with the exception of one year, 1928 to 1929, which they spent at Mesa, Arizona. On June 5, 1923, their home was brightened by the birth of a daughter, Shirley Mae, who unfortunately they were permitted to keep for a short stay of only seven months.
He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Elgin and the Elks lodge of Decorah. He was of a progressive nature and interested in all projects which were for the good of the town and community where he lived. He loved the out-of-doors and never tired of caring for the trees and shrubs of the town park. He was always respected among his business associates for his frankness and lack of deception.
He is survived by his widow, his mother, a brother, Trafford Heston, of Los Angeles, Calif., one half-brother, Virgil O’Malley, of New York City, his uncle L. Heston, of Mechanicsville, besides other near relatives.
Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul’s M.E. church Monday afternoon with the Rev. J. J. Snyder officiating. Burial was made in the Elgin cemetery. Casket bearers were, H. W. Falb, Wm. F. Miller, Mel Kohler, Chas. Gruver, Elmer Houg and G. H. Falb. Hymns were sung by Howard Shaffer, Edward Klingman, Wayne Gilson and C. B. Schori, with R. C. Jorgenson at the piano.
