LOCAL WEEKEND ACCIDENTS RESULTS IN ONE Fatality.
GERALD NICHOLS IN FATAL ACCIDENT.

Gerald Nichels, 34, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Nickels, Elgin, was fatally injured about 1:15 Sunday morning in a car – pedestrian accident, just south of the Elgin City limits on county black-top W51. This is between the Russell Wenger and Dr. John Cunningham homes.

According to Fayette County Deputy Sheriff Roland Gruver, Gerald was on his way home from Elgin, walking on the road, when a car traveling towards Elgin, came over the brow of a hill and was unable to avoid hitting him. No charges were filed against the driver of the car, Jeff Cline, 20, son of the Harry Clines, Elgin.

Jeff went immediately to the Duane Barker home to report the accident and get help. Becky Olesen, 18, West Union, was a passenger in the car.

Immediate survivors of Gerald include his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.

Trooper Virgil Smith of the Highway Patrol, and Fayette County Deputy Sheriff Roland Gruver investigated the accident.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elgin, with Rev. Delbert Dawes officiating. Muehlethalers’ Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was made in the Elgin Cemetery.
