OBITUARIES.
MYRTLE BUTIKOFER

Services for Myrtle Butikofer, 88, were Friday, Jan. 30 at Elgin Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kathleen Soldwisch officiated. Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery, Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin, was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Ruth Butikofer was born Dec. 27, 1909 in rural Clayton County, Elgin to Olavus T. Knudtson and Belle (Stave) Knudtson. She was raised and educated in the area, attending rural school in Clayton County and attended Elgin High School for two years.

She was baptized and affirmed in the faith of her baptized at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. She married Fred E. Butikofer March 11, 1926, at the St. Olaf parsonage. They had two children. Myrtle lived her entire life in the Elgin area. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was always interested and concerned about the well being and activities of her family.

Myrtle was an active member of Elgin Lutheran Church since its beginning and enjoyed singing in the choir as well as starting and directing a cherub choir for many years. She taught preschool Sunday School for 25 years. She has the privilege of having all seven of her grandchildren in her Sunday School class over the years. Many of her preschool children knew her as Grandma Myrtle, as that was the name they heard from her own grandchildren in the class.

For the past six and half years she has resided at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville. She died there Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, 1998.

Survivors include a daughter, Ramona Moore; a son, Francis (Shirley) Butikofer, all of Elgin; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Selma Landsgard, St. Olaf; a brother, Elmer (Alverta) Knudtson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Knudtson of Guttenberg; and also many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; a brother, Orvin Knudtson; and a son-in-law, Bill Moore.

Casket Bearers were David Butikofer, Dan Butikofer Jr., Leo Friederich, Lyle Butikofer, Mel Butikofer, and Don Backhaus.
