Elsa Christofferson

Elsa Christofferson, 93, of Postville, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the hospital in Cresco.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, with the Rev. Robert Hupp officiating.

Special music was provided by Joann Martins, organist, and Ronald Meyer, soloist.

Casket bearers were her grandsons and great-grandchildren. Burial was at the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville handled arrangements.

Elsa Marie (Johansen) Christofferson, the daughter of John and Karen Johanna (Jorgensen) Johansen, was born March 1, 1906, in Fayette County, near Hawkeye.

She was baptized April 18, 1906, into the Lutheran faith by the Rev. J. G. Rembold at Hawkeye and was confirmed by the Rev. E. T. Finck in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville.

Elsa graduated from Elkader High School in 1925. She attended the Normal Training for teachers and taught in the rural schools of Clayton County. She continued her education classes at Luther College in DECORAH and Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

On Oct. 18,1929, she was married to Harvey Quentin Christofferson at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. To this union two daughters were born.

Elsa taught in the Ossian Elementary School for 29 years. One of the most important things in her life was her family. She enjoyed cooking for them and was especially noted for her apple pies, krumkake and caramels. She also liked to play cards with friends and family.

Elsa was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan and Tennis Mork of Postville, and Janis Vokaty of Cresco; four grandchildren, Alan and Sue Mork of Bettendorf, Larry and Barb Mork of DeWitt, Terry and Patty Mork of Adel, and Christopher and May Vokaty of Memphis, Tenn.; greatgrandchildren Tess and Erik Mork, Jason, Carrie, Cody and Leah Mork, Erin, Shelby and Abbie Mork, Jennifer Sammon, and Bill and wife Jennifer Sammon; and a sister-in-law, Sylbert (Louis) Christofferson of Decorah.

Elsa Christofferson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey; a grandson who died at birth; a son-in-law, Arnold Vokaty; three brothers, Carl, Henry and John; and three sisters, Eleanor Johansen, Mary Ostlie and Emma Reinhardt
