OELWEIN - John W. Catlin, 89, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein. Inurnment will be at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

John was born Jan. 6, 1915, at Oelwein, the son of William Ray and Effie (Lofstredt) Catlin. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1934 and attended Iowa State University. John was retired from the U.S. Army, having served with special forces during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his sister, Adelle (Capps) Mohr of Nevada, Iowa; one niece, Mary (Mark) Ambrose of Nevada and a great-niece, Emily Ambrose; one nephew, William (Karen) Capps of St. Peters, Mo., and great-niece, Elizabeth Hildahl; and special friends and caregivers, Bob and Sherrie Barker of Oelwein.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Miriam McClurg in 1973; and an aunt, Annette Golly.
