Oelwein Daily Register, Wednesday, 3 April 1929.

Benjamin Franklin Thompson was born in Racine, Wisconsin, July 8, 1861, and passed away at his home southeast of Maynard, March 21, 1929 aged 67 years, 8 months and 13 days.

He moved with his parents to Fayette county, Iowa, in 1873, settling in Smithfield township. In the spring of 1875 they moved to the farm which has since been his home. His father died when he was a young man and he made a home and cared for his mother until her death in 1904. April 4, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Guritz and to this union two sons were born, Franklin and Arthur, who have been a great comfort and help to their father.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and his home was his greatest joy and comfort. He was a good neighbor and friend.

He was township clerk for 10 years, secretary of the Smithfield school board 20 years, and also director of the Maynard Consolidated school and Harlan Creamery Company for several years.

In 1926 he suffered a slight stroke and had never been well since that time. Thursday evening about 6:30 o'clock as he was sitting in his home he was stricken with apoplexy and before help could reach him he peacefully passed away.

He leaves to mourn his death his faithful and devoted wife, his two sons, three sisters, Mrs. Ella Mittlestadt of Marshalltown, Mrs. Steve Masters and Mrs. Elzetta Ecker of Maynard and other relatives and hosts of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. F. Rumbaugh. The church was filled to its capacity with relatives, neighbors and friends, who gathered to pay their last respects to this most estimable citizen. He was laid to rest in the family lot in Long Grove cemetery.
