Elgin Echo, Thursday, 5 March 1896.

On Sunday, February 23, after an illness of several weeks, occurred the death of Mrs. Dan Hills at the Hills home in Pleasant Valley Township. Funeral services were held at the Wesleyian Methodist church in Elgin, Monday, February 24, conducted by Rev. Hack.

Mary J. Hood was born near Rockford, Illinois, June 12, 1841. She moved to Elgin, Iowa, in 1854 and was united in marriage to John Hills in 1859, was left a widow in 1862. Three children were the fruits of this union, two of whom are now living John Hill of Elgin and Mrs. Ora DeSart, of Lester, Iowa. October 25, 1864 she was married to Daniel Hills, who survives her. From this union five children were born, four boys and one girl: Mrs. Ida Shipton, of McLeod, Montana, Chancy Hills, of Elgin, and Rush and Harry Hills who are still at home. The other boy having died some two years past.

Mrs. Hill was an old and respected citizen of this Township; her age was 54 years; she leaves a husband and several children and a large number of friends to mourn her death. Mrs. Hill was one of these women whose lives are spent in doing good for others. She was a perfect mother and wife and as a neighbor and friend she was always lovable, never failing to assist the sick and needy and always anxious to raise the fallen by word and act. She pardoned all misdeeds, and thus proved herself a true disciple of virtue and righteousness, for virtue pardons those she would mend.

The death of Mrs. Hill is truly a loss to those who survive her, but the influence of her life will go on forever and ever in the lines of honestness, kindness and goodness. Her life was a living example of the Golden Rule.
