Elgin Echo, Thur., 27 February 1896.

The death of Gracie Lehman occurred at the home of her parents in Elgin, Iowa, Feb. 24, 1896. Funeral was held at the German Baptist church in Elgin, Wednesday, Feb. 27 conducted by Rev. Hack. Deceased was the daughter of Rudolph and Mary Lehman and was born in Elgin, Nov. 24, 1891 and was therefore four years, two months and twenty-eight days old at the time of her death.

Gracie was one of those sweet, lovable little girls whom it seems are too innocent and angelic to ever grow to womanhood and endure all the pain, sorrow and heartaches of this world of disappointment and stern reality. She was taken away while her little mind was full of sunshine unbroken by a cloud or dark shadow. The memory of her will always be that of a beautiful flower seen and enjoyed while it is in the bud and most pleasing to look upon; or a faultless day dawn with the sun just rising above the horizon and giving all nature a tint of celestial color and blending all in one harmony. Many days will the (about 7 words illegible) talk and cunning ways of the little maid. Oh ! For one more opportunity to clasp her sweet, dear, wee form in her arms and lull her to peaceful sleep or dispel the tiny woes and griefs that to her baby heart were mighty. All that were then cares to mother would now be joys. And the father; returning home after a day of toil and anxiety will think of and yearn for the baby girl who came toddling up the street to meet him and cheer his weary and careworn life. Memory will paint the picture oft seen in reality, of the neighbors, in jest, telling the little girl that "that is not her papa, its another man," but she was never mistaken in her papa. Gracie you were a bonnie, winsome lassie, all sweetness and love and the memory of you will be like a ray of God's own bright sun in the room where but one such ray is known.
