Elgin Echo, Thur., 31 Dec. 1903. From the Oelwein Record.
Fred Glode, a resident of Jefferson township, residing a few miles south of the city, met death last Saturday afternoon by a peculiar accident.
He was engaged with some other men in sawing wood on the Wolf farm by means of a tread power. The machine was old and the fly wheel cracked. Unfortunately for Glode he was standing in a direct line with the fly wheel when it burst and he was struck by the pieces, the larger struck him in the neck, the other in the temple. He was instantly killed.
The men had a young team on the power and they started up fast which, it is thought, was mainly responsible for the wheel breaking as it did and the pieces flying with such extraordinary force.
The deceased was of German descent and came to this country in 1878. At the time of his death he was 43 years of age. A wife and two children mourn his loss.
He was a member of the Lutheran church of this city, from where the funeral occurred Tuesday, conducted by Rev. G. J. Zeilinger.- Oelwein Record.
