Susan Hess departed this life Aug. 15, 1903, at her late home in Wadena.

She was born in Harrison county, Ohio, in 1826, and at the time of her death was 77 years of age. In the year 1845 she was united in marriage to Martin Walters and was the mother of twelve children, nine of whom are still living; five girls and four boys. Three daughters preceded the mother to the spirit land. Mrs. Walters was one of Iowa's early settlers having come to this state in the year 1824. She was a true and faithful member of the U.B. church and constantly followed the teachings of the Master whom she loved. The funeral rites were conducted by Rev. Zabriskie and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.
