Elgin Echo, Thursday, 9 April 1903.

Arthur Matthys was born at Wadena, December 23, 1887, and died April 5, 1903, aged 15 years, 3 months and 13 days.

Most of his life was spent in Elgin and vicinity, he being the foster child of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Matthys.

For a few months past he has been making his home with his foster brother, Frank Matthys, near New Albin, where he was taken sick with appendicitis, which resulted in general peritonitis with other complications. Hoping that an operation would save his life he was taken to La Crosse, Wis., on Saturday, but he grew rapidly worse and passed away Sunday afternoon. This writer took care of him the night before he was taken to the hospital and in speaking of his illness and the possibility of not recovering, he said it would be all right if he did not, although he would like to get well, and during the night he prayed and asked the writer to pray, that he might be relieved of pain. He was always a pious boy of a gentle and retiring disposition and loved by all.

The body of the deceased arrived in this city Tuesday afternoon, and services were held in the German Baptist church Wednesday at 1 o'clock. Interment was made in Elgin cemetery.
