Elgin Echo, Thursday, 3 December 1908.

Elizabeth Neuenswander was born August 18, 1830, at Langnan, Bern County, Switzerland, and died November 24, 1908, at her home in Illyria. She was married to Simon Rothlisberger August 31, 1848. Three years later they came to America locating at Monroe County, Ohio, where they lived but one year. They removed to Clayton County, Iowa, where they resided three years and then came to Fayette County, making this their permanent home. Mrs.Rothlisberger has been a widow for 21 years, having lost her husband July 29, 1887.

To the union of Elizabeth and Simon Rothlisberger 11 children were born, three of whom have preceded her to their last resting place.

Those left to mourn the loss of a loving mother are Alice, of Elgin; John, of Illyria; Simon, of Remsen; Louisa, of Fort Collins, Colorado; Paulena, of Gary, South Dakota; Fred, Rosanna and Ida of Illyria. Also three sisters, two brothers, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Besides those of her own family Mrs. Rothlisberger leaves a whole community of sincere mourners. Those who have enjoyed her free hospitality can never forget, and her sympathy and warmhearted friendliness have endeared her to a large circle of acquaintances. Her hands were ever ready with help and "in her tongue was the law of kindness." She was a life long and consistent number of the German Evangelical church.

The funeral services were held from the Illyria church Friday, conducted by Rev. Gallagher, of Dubuque, who paid many tributes of respect to this noble woman. A large concourse of friends and relatives gathered to pay a last sad tribute of respect to one they had learned to love and honor by constant contact with a spirit that was ever kind, sympathetic and at all times ready and willing to extend a helping hand to the needy. She has lived a life that will ever be a monument to the memory of a life well and usefully spent. The interment was made in the Illyria Cemetery.
