Elgin Echo, Thursday, 19 November 1908.

National bank examiner, E. B. Shaw, of West Union, died at Carroll, Iowa, last Thursday morning of hemorrhage of the brain. Mr. Shaw had been at Carroll for some time where he was in charge of the First National bank, whose president, W. J. Culbertson, recently shot himself.

Though apparently in good health Wednesday Mr. Shaw was dying Thursday morning when the clerk at the hotel sought to arouse him for breakfast. He had been stricken the night before while undressing to retire and had lain across the foot of the bed all night conscious. He was removed to the hospital and died there shortly after. Shaw's wife and daughter arrived in Carroll, the same day, altogether unconscious of the death of Shaw; they had planned to remain with him during his work.

Mr. Shaw was about 57 years of age and was a native of Fayette County. For many years be was cashier of Fayette County National Bank, which position he resigned about five years ago to accept that of national bank examiner. He suffered a severe illness a year ago, being troubled with nervous prostration and a possible affliction of the heart. As no word that he had been ill had been received by his family, it is believed that he was suddenly stricken. He was one of the substantial citizens of West Union and his death will the sincerely regretted by the community.
