Elgin Echo, Thursday, 23 July 1908.

The funeral of Charles Woodard, who died after an illness of but a day or two, at his home in West Union on Thursday night last, was held from his late home east of the courthouse square, at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. Baumgardner of the United Brethren church officiating, assisted by Rev. Day of the Baptist church.

Charles Woodard was one of the early pioneers of West Union and was accounted one of the wealthiest men in the county, his possessions, mostly of farms and lands, being estimated at upwards of $100,000. Mr. Woodard laid the foundations of his fortune by engaging in the lumber business at West Union about 1860, before the Civil War, and continued this business for a number of years. He was owner of the old Arlington Hotel for about five years, and was proprietor of the rink business, east of the courthouse.

The deceased was between 79 and 80 years of age, and is only survived by his wife. The couple never had but one child, which died in infancy shortly after locating at West Union. Mrs. Woodard also possesses an ample fortune in her own name. R. O. Woodard, Of West Union, who is a nephew of the deceased, will have the management and the settlement of the estate.
