Elgin Echo, Thursday, 2 June 1898.
Seldom has this community been so overclouded by sadness as was occasioned by the death of Mrs. Bert Doty, which occurred at her home near West Union on the morning of May 22 after a lingering illness, aged 22 years and 24 days.
Cora Ernst was known to Highland's people, among whom she spent her girlhood as an upright young woman. For the past year she had been in delicate health. On September 5, 1897, she was united in marriage to the man of her choice and together with a new cheerfulness they planned to maintain a happy home. Shortly they assumed charge of the Darnell stock farm near West Union, but sadly she grew more frail. Dr. (?) rendered constant care from the first to the end, with Dr. Parker, of Fayette, as consulting physician, but all that medical science and loving hands could do was of no avail.
The sympathy of this community is extended to the sorrowing ones, but to none more deservedly than the grief stricken husband who watched so patiently and hopefully by the bedside. The funeral was held from the Union church May 23, Rev. Robt. D. Mc??mack, of Fayette, preached a touching discourse and the remains were interred in the Highland cemetery.
