Mary Christena Shaffer was born in Illyria Township, Fayette County, February 19, 1899, and passed to the great beyond at the family home in Elgin, Wednesday, October 16, 1918, at the age of 19 years, seven months and 27 days. Her last illness dates back only a short time, and was pronounced pneumonia.

Mary was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Shaffer, and until the family came to Elgin to make their home about 18 months ago, her life had been spent in Illyria where she was known and loved by all.

Mary Shaffer was one of our bright and winning young women, who possessed a charm of disposition that bespoke for her big possibilities in future years. Her thoughtfulness for her associates and her ever willing assistance to others will live long in the memory of all.

Besides her father and mother four sisters and three brothers are left to bridge over the gap in the family circle made by the first death in that family. The sisters are; Mrs. H. B. Gilson and Mrs. John Bower of Elgin, Mrs. Fred O'Dell of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Guy Whitford of Lime Springs. The brothers are Israel, John M. and Ray, all of whom live near Elgin. There are 18 nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends with whom Mary was a great favorite.

Funeral arrangements are that the relatives shall meet at the home at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow where Rev. Wedel will conduct a short service. The funeral party will then proceed to the Illyria church where services will be held in the open air at the cemetery.
