Elgin Echo, Thur., 18 May 1899. From the West Union Gazette.

Melvin Lackey was born in Fairfield, VT., Feb. 9, 1827, and died at his home in Arlington, IA., Sunday, May 7, 1899, being 72 years, 2 months and 28 days old. He spent his early boyhood days in the place of his birth until he was 14 years old. At this time he moved with his father's family to Canada. Dec. 16, 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Jane Hutchins, at Furnaux, Canada. In 1855 he and his family moved to Iowa, settling in Putnam township, Fayette county, where they remained on a farm until 1856, when they settled in Brush Creek, now Arlington, where he has resided till the present time. He built the home upon his removal there in which he lived until the day of his death. He leaves the wife with whom he has lived happily for 49 years and two children, M. H. Lackey aged 48, and Flora Newton aged 46, both of whom were born in Canada.

Melvin Lackey was a first class carpenter and wagon maker, and when in business always had all he could do. March 19, 1864, he enlisted in Capt. L. L. Ainsworth's Co. C, 6th Regiment, Iowa Cavalry. His company was sent west and engaged in the unpleasant task of fighting the Indians. Dec. 17, 1865, Mr. Lackey was honorably discharged and returned to his Arlington home and resumed his wagon-making which he followed until about two years ago. Mr. Lackey's sickness dates from January 1899, and from that time until his death it has been painful and hard to bear. He has not been confined to his bed all this time but has had spells of being better and then worse until the end came stated above.

Mrs. Lackey who has traveled the thorny journey of life and proved a valuable helpmeet to him in all the trials and vicissitudes of life, is now quite sick and has been ill more or less for the past three months.

The funeral of Melvin Lackey was held at Arlington, Monday, and was attended by seven of his comrades of Co. C -- L. L. Ainsworth, T. D. Reeder, R. E. Burlingham, A. R. Barrett, of West Union; Geo. Whitely, of Fayette; and J. E. Bissel and Newton Phillips, of Volga.
