Elgin Echo, Thur., 8 April 1909. (condensed).

Once again we are called on to note the passing of one of Elgin's old and respected citizens. Rudolph Lehman was the youngest of 12 children of the Lehman family. He was born August 2, 1849, in Canton, Berne, Switzerland, and came to this country with his parents in 1852, settling in Elgin, Fayette Co., Iowa. On February 23, 1875, he was united in marriage with Lena Rothlisberger. Five children were born unto them, three boys and two girls. Mrs. Robbins died April 17, 1885.

Mary Stoehr became his second wife February 26, 1888, and to them two children were born, Grace dying at the age of four years and Adolph who survives.

Mr. Lehman passed away at his home in Elgin, April 2, 1909, aged 59 years and 8 months. He is survived by a loving wife, three sons, Earnest R., of Florence, Colo.; Carl A., of Minneapolis, Minn., and Adolph, of this city, besides three step-children, Mrs. Will Cooley, of Cedar Rapids; Gus Stoehr, of Iowa City, and Arthur Stoehr, of Lacrosse, Wis., together with four brothers and two sisters, John, Jake and Chris. Lehman, of this city, Nick Lehman, of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Henry Scharlach, of Forest, Ill., and Mrs. Sam Reinhart, of Cresco, together with many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Lehman's illness dates back some time. About a year ago he was stricken with paralysis, since which time he has been unable to perform any labor. At times he could be up and about, but he grew steadily weaker until the final dissolution came.

For years he plied his trade as blacksmith in his brother, Peter Lehman's shop. Upon the death of his brother he took full charge of the business and conducted it until he was compelled by ill health to retire. He was an honest and industrious man and by his kindly ways had won a place in the hearts of young and old alike. His departure has caused a deep sorrow and he will long live in the memory of his many friends.

Funeral Services were held from the German Baptist church on Monday afternoon, and the remains were laid to rest in Elgin cemetery.

Among those to attend from afar and not mentioned above were: Chas. Ratz, of Arlington; Levi Lehman, of Strawberry Point; John Lehman Jr., of La Porte City; D. F. Scharlach, of Fairbury, Ill.; Mrs. Jacob Butz, of Ridgway, and Mrs. Ohmacht, of Cresco.
