Elgin Echo, Thur., 1 July 1909.

Ernest Dennler was born in New York state August (13 or 18), 1893, and died at Iowa City June 25, 1909, at the age of fifteen years, ten months and three days.

He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Christ Dennler who, with six other children - three boys and three girls - are left to mourn the loss of a loving and dutiful son and brother.

This spring he was taken sick with severe pains back of his ear. He ceased work and well known remedies were applied until the arrival of a physician. It was soon deemed advisable to have an operation and he was taken to the hospital at Iowa City and several abcesses were removed from his head. He rallied nicely from the shock of the operation and it was thought that he would recover rapidly. Complications arose however and he died at the time stated above, his father and mother both being with him. The body was brought to Elgin Saturday.

Sunday afternoon, at two o'clock, the funeral sermon was preached at the German Baptist church, where a large number of people had gathered to be with the sorrowing family. Rev. Draewel chose the theme of his discourse from the tenth Chapter of the Gospel of St. Mark, from the seventeenth to the twenty-second verse. Appropriate songs were sung and all that was earthly of the loved son was carried to its last resting place in the Elgin cemetery by Hull Brabham, Earl Bennett, Hugh Connor, Ralph and Guy Reed and Gottfried Kurt, six of his boy friends and companions. Loving hands had lined the grave with beautiful flowers and every act of sympathy and kindness was done to ease the sorrow of the parents and brothers and sisters.

Ernest was an industrious, good and kind hearted lad and had a host of friends. He will be sorely missed in the home and by his friends.
