Elgin Echo, Thur., 19 Aug. 1909.

A sad drowning occurred at Oelwein last week when Theron Haskins, a young man nineteen years old, met death in the lake at the city park, where, in company of Rev. Nichols, he was in swimming. The young man was not a very good swimmer and after a short time in the water he called for help. Rev. Nichols made a desperate effort to save him and nearly lost his own life in the attempt. The body was recovered after being in the water an hour. Young Haskins was at the park as a member of a picnic party from the Presbyterian Sunday School and his tragic death was a severe blow to his parents. He was regarded as one of Oelwein's most able and influential young men.
