Elgin Echo, Thur., 04 March 1909.
Monday we received a clipping from Wiley Schopp which tells of the tragic death of Dollie Schopp. The family formerly resided in Elgin and their friends here will sympathize with them in their bereavement.
"Dollie Schopp, the young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Schopp, met with a terrible death on Tuesday last. The girl was trying to start a fire in the stove by pouring kerosene oil on the smoldering embers, when suddenly there was an explosion, covering her with flames. The mother, who was nearby, rushed to her aid and extinguished the flames as best she could. The poor child, however, was so badly injured that within a few hours afterward she succumbed, death mercifully relieving her of her terrible suffering. Mrs. Schopp who frantically strove to save her child was badly burned also, but notwithstanding her injuries, she put out the flames in the house.
The fire occurred on the Palmer lease, where the family is employed by the Palmer Oil Company.
The employees of the Palmer Co. as well as the Brooks, Dome and the Stendel Oil Companies and also the ladies who conduct the Dome and Palmer boarding houses made up a purse for the unfortunate family amounting to almost $200. The good ladies also ministered greatly to the wants of the injured and provided every comfort that was possible.
The girl was 11 years of age and interment took place on Thursday from the family's home in Santa Maria."
