Elgin Echo, Thursday, 15 August 1912. (condensed).

Monday afternoon our people were surprised to learn that Gus Thoma, one of our leading business men, had passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Earn Schori, where he had gone only the evening before while feeling badly from an attack of jaundice. For the past year or more Mr. Thoma had been in poor health, but not even his most intimate acquaintances had any idea that his was a serious case. Acute indigestion was the direct cause of his death.

Gus Thoma was born at Elgin, Iowa, April 9, 1875, and died at the place of his birth August 12, 1912, aged thirty-seven years, four months and three days. His whole life has been spent in the town of his birth. For a number of years he assisted his father in the mercantile business. After the death of his father, which occurred April 23, 1902, he and his brother, Max, succeeded to their father's business and have since conducted it under the name Thoma Brothers.

He leaves to mourn his demise three sisters Mrs. C. J. Harrington, Mrs. C. S. Halstenson, Mrs. Earn Schori and one brother, Max, besides many relatives and friends. As a business man he was a success, as a friend he was staunch and true, ever thoughtful and considerate and he always did that which he believed to be right.

The Services were held from the Schori home, conducted by Rev. Graham and assisted by Rev. Draewel. From the home, Silver Leaf Lodge, A.F. & A.M., of which deceased was a member, took charge and the remains were marched to the cemetery where Masonic rites were given. A large number of relatives and friends attended and the flowers were profuse and beautiful. The sympathy of the whole community is extended those who mourn.
