Elgin Echo, Thursday, 12 September 1895. (condensed - From the West Union Gazette.)

John Spence, at one time a resident of West Union, was caught in the shafting while working on the upper floor of the oatmeal mill at Cedar Rapids shortly before 5 o'clock Tuesday evening and almost instantly killed. The supposition is that he was attempting to throw on one of the large leather belts when his clothing got caught and he was drawn to the shaft, where he was whirled around until beaten to death.

Mr. Spence has been in the employ of the American Cereal Co. for the past 6-7 years and was a sober, industrious and faithful employee. He was a cousin of D. W. Clements of this city and J. J. Clements of Cedar Rapids. He was a single man about 35 years old and made his home with his maiden sister, Margaret.

The remains were brought to West Union for burial yesterday.- Gazette.
