Elgin Echo, Thursday, 1 May 1902.

By the death of Mr. Lewis Thoma Elgin has lost one of its oldest settlers and most prominent business men. He passed away last Saturday, April 26th, 1902, at five o'clock in the morning at the mature age of 68 years, 4 months and 13 days. The interment took place in the Elgin cemetery on Monday afternoon. The impressive services were in charge of the Masonic order of which he was a member and were conducted according to Masonic rite. Rev. R. J. Hack preached the funeral sermon at the Baptist church. The floral tributes were of rare variety and beauty, and these together with the large number attending the services bore witness to the high esteem in which the deceased was held.

Mr. Thoma was born in Germany and came to this country in 1858 and settled at Prairie du Chien, where four years later he was united in marriage with Miss Rosa Schmid. In 1862 the family took up their abode in Elgin, where both Mr. and Mrs. Thoma ended their life's journey. Of twelve children born to them six preceded him in death, with their mother who died in 1892. Mrs. C. J. Harrington, Mrs. C. S. Holstanson, Mrs. E. Schorl, Robert, Gus and Max are left to mourn the loss of their beloved father. They have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.
