Elgin Echo, Thursday, 27 December 1894.

John Miller died at his home in Elgin Dec. 19, 1894, aged 76 years, 2 months and 8 days. Services were conducted by Rev. Hack, of the German Baptist church, Friday Dec. 21, interment in Elgin cemetery. John Miller was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1818 and came to America in 1847 and Fayette County, Iowa, in 1855, where he has since resided. He was well and favorably known in and about Elgin and had many warm friends among the Germans. He was a kind father and leaves two sons and one daughter to mourn his death. Since death is one of the inevitable results of life, let us in this instance pay a tribute to the living which has been more than earned. There is nothing so beautiful, and touching, or as sacred as a child's devotion and self sacrifice to a parent when it is exemplified as it was in the case of Tena Miller and her unfortunate father. She has the love, and highest respect of everyone.
