Funeral services for Ernestine "Ernie" Mae Holzer, age 75, were held on Friday, June 24, 1994 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa. Rev. Judy Deweber officiated. Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery in Elgin, Iowa.

Ernie was the youngest daughter of Ernest and Austie (Bennett) Holzer. She was born May 14, 1919 at Elgin, Iowa where she spent her young life and received her elementary and high school education. Ernie later received a degree in business education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. She taught school in Quasqueton, Iowa for one year. She went to California where she worked for a shipping company. Ernestine returned home when her father became ill and she helped care for him. She taught high school business at the Waukon, Iowa High School for many years, retiring when her eyesight failed her due to diabetes.

Ernie was a baptized and longtime member of the Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a wonderful teacher who genuinely cared for her students. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor and despite the many adversities in her life, she always had a smile on her face. She will be remembered for her love of convertibles which were always used for the Waukon Indians Homecoming Parades. She will be remembered for her golf cart with the slow moving red flag emblem which she used in Elgin to take her downtown after she was no longer able to drive an automobile. But most of all Miss Holzer will be remembered as a woman with a deep concern and general interest in everyone she met. She showed a deep devotion to her animal friends and to her human friends, she quietly gave of herself through many acts of kindness and good deeds.

Ernestine Holzer died Monday, June 20, 1994 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law, Cliff Christ; a nephew, Jim Christ, and a niece, Shirley Heston.

She is survived by her two sisters, Marie Nelson and Arlie Christ, both of Elgin, Iowa; a niece, Connie (Roger) Coonts and their family of Arizona; and a nephew, Billy (Aggie) Christ and their family, also of Arizona.
