Rites Held For Fred Suckow

Funeral services for Fred Suckow, who died early Sunday morning at the Palmer Memorial hospital at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 17 days, were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran church. Rev. Paul T. Meyer conducted the service. Burial was in the West Union cemetery with Myron Ihde, James Bachman, Kenneth Suckow, Robert Suckow, Ernest Helgerson and Virgil Suckow acting as pallbearers. Burnham and Wood Funeral Home was in charge.

Fred Frederick Suckow, born Jan 31, 1874, in Germany, came with his father to Clayton county when he was nine years old.

On Nov. 7, 1899, he was united in marriage with Sophia Schave. To them 11 children were born, of whom nine survive. Mr. Suckow was engaged in farming here in Fayette County during all of his active life. After the death of his wife on Nov. 19, 1949, he made his home with his daughter, Ruby, here in West Union for eight years. The last two and a half years had been spent in the Good Samaritan Home, where he made his home until his admittance to Palmer Memorial hospital on Dec. 31, 1959.

Surviving are his nine children, Otto Suckow, Waterloo; Viola, Mrs. Elmer Ihde, Monona; Henry, Postville; Helmuth, Maynard; Esther, Mrs. Merlin Bachman, Hazleton; Charlie and Lester, both of Hawkeye; Ruby, Mrs. Dwain Mabb, West Union, and Ruth, Mrs. Henry Helgerson, Postville; 36 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife, one son in infancy and Alfa, who died in 1918 at the age of ten.
