Sophie Marie Schrader
Sophie Marie Schrader, daughter of Henry and Katherine Glandorf, was born December 21, 1903 at Ankelohe near Hanover, Germany. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant on January 17, 1904, at the church in Ringstedt, Germany, and was confirmed at the same church on March 28, 1918.
In 1923, at the age of 19, Sophie immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on April 14. She worked as a domestic doing housework for local people and at the Globe Hotel until her marriage to Otto Schrader on September 30, 1925, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, IA. To this union, two daughters, Anna and Shirley, were born. They lived on a farm near Eldorado until their retirement in 1970 when they moved into Eldorado. In 1975 they had the privilege of celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Sophie was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and Women of the ELCA. She served in many ways especially the many quilts she hand-sewed. She had a special love for gardening and flowers, especially roses.
In December 1994, Sophie entered Residential Care at Waukon and later the Good Samaritan Care Center. Sophie died early Wednesday morning, June 14, 2000, in Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.
Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Otto, who died April 17, 1979; 5 brothers, Dietrich, Derend, Klaus, Christoph and John; 2 sisters, Marie and Gesene; 2 sons-in-law, Wesley Bedtka and Ernie McDougall, a grandson-in-law, Norbert Zabel; and one great grandchild, Patricia Bedtka.
Sophie is survived by her 2 daughters, Anna McDougall of Rochester, MN, and Shirley Eberling and her husband, Karlton of Postville, Ia; 5 grandchildren, Suzanne Zabel, Kenneth Bedtka, Teresa (Lyle) Ewing, Kevin (Teri) Eberling and Mark Eberling; 10 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews in Germany, and friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eldorado, IA, on June 16, 2000, with Pastor Dennis A Hugdahl officiating.
Pallbearers were Lyle Ewing, Mark Eberling, Jeff Zabel, Kevin Eberling, Kenneth Bedtka and Darl Zabel.
Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Vagts, Haidain Grimes, Charles Shipton, Alvin Gross, and Lester Steffens.
