Bertha Abbey, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Witmer Abbey, was born at Elgin on December 11, 1869. She attended the Elgin schools and took advanced teacher training at Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. Pursuing a career of teaching , she taught in the Fayette and Carroll county rural schools and then in the Cedar Rapids elementary schools for 27 years before her retirement to her home.
Being the sole remaining member of the Abbey family, she was preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters. After living a life dedicated to the enrichment of the children under her tutelage, she, with the complications common with advanced age, passed on last Wednesday, July 6, at the age of 89 years.
Her survivors are nine nieces and nephews, some great nieces and nephews and a host of her children, scattered over the face of the earth, whose lives she influenced as their teacher.
Funeral services were held at the Muehlethaler funeral home Saturday afternoon. They were conducted by Don Caspers, pastor of St. Paul’s.
Burial was made in the family lot at the Elgin cemetery.
Out of town relatives attending were the Tom O’Leary family and Mrs. Georgia Elkema, Iowa City, Lewis Stoehr and Mrs. Nelle Schori of Cedar Rapids.
