Eleanor R. Butikofer

Eleanor R. Butikofer, 99, of Elgin, IA, died Wednesday morning, October 10, 2001 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, following a long illness. She was the oldest of 10 children born to Fred J. and Elizabeth (Gehring) Schneider on November 14, 1901, at Elgin on a farm in Marion Twp., Clayton County. She attended rural school at Sunny Dale Dist. #4 which was very close to her home. She later attended Elgin High School, graduating in 1919.

That fall she accepted a position at the Elgin State Bank and worked there until the fall of 1926, when she became the bride of George Butikofer. They soon started farming and in the 1930s they adopted a son, James. They farmed for a number of years until her husband's health began to fail. He passed away in 1985. Her son James died in 1989.

She was a faithful member of the Apostolic Christian Church and enjoyed teaching a class of Sunday School children for a number of years. She was a lover of God's creations and enjoyed gardening and working with flowers as well as having guest to come to visit.

Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Butikofer of Long Beach, CA; 4 grandchildren, Debbie (Glen) Prater of Moreno Valley, CA, Randy (Penny) Butikofer of Van Buren, AR, Gary (Kathy) Butikofer of Fairfield, OH and Tammy Butikofer of Long Beach, CA; 6 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, LaVerne (Kathryn) Schneider of Elgin, Jacob Schneider of Elgin and Robert (Bernice) Schneider of Postville, and 2 sisters, Betty (Chester) Curtis of Edina, MN and Ruth Metzger of Elgin.

She was preceded in death by her husband George; her parents; one son James; 3 brothers, Edwin Schneider in infancy, Arthur and Allen Schneider, and one sister Marie.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 13, 2001, at Apostolic Christian Church in Elgin, Iowa, with local ministers officiating. Interment was at Apostolic Cemetery, Elgin, IA.

Casket bearers were Robert, Jr., Lawrence, Charles, and Fred Schneider, and David and Philip Metzger.
