Death Notice

Fred B. Hain, 67, died at his home in Oelwein at 9:45 pm Saturday, December 20, 1947. He had been a resident of of Oelwein for 28 years. He was born September 5, 1880 at Shokopee, Minnesota, the son of Mary E. Gardner and Edwin F. Hain of Indiana. He was an Interstate Commerce Commission inspector and retired in 1944.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Dorothy Young of Cedar Rapids; step-daughter, Mrs. L. J. Strubel, Oelwein; sons Louis B. Smith, Melbourn, Florida, Fred W. Smith, Elizabethton, Tenn.; a brother, George Hein, Chicago; a sister, Mrs. Helen Weidner, Dubuque.

Funeral services will be held at the Brant Funeral Home Tuesday, December 23 at 3 pm. The Rev. LaVerne Ervin will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Obituary

Fred B. Hain died at his home, December 20, 1947 at 9:45 pm after a lingering illness. He was born in Shokopee, Minnesota, September 5, 1880 and died at the age of 67 years, 3 months, and 15 days.

On March 2, 1923 he was married to Ida Smith who survives along with a daughter, Mrs. Art Young of Cedar Rapids, one sister, Mrs. Helen Weidner and a brother, George Hain of Chicago; and also three step-children, Mrs. Gladys Strubel of Oelwein, Louis B. Smith of Melbourne, Florida, Rev. Fred W. Smith of Elizabethton, Tenn. and seven grandchildren.

He began his career of railroading at the age of 13 years starting at St. Paul, Minnesota, coming to Oelwein, then to Chicago, Illinois. The last 28 years have been spent in the service of the Chicago Great Western at Oelwein. He belonged to the Machinists Union and the Modern Woodmen. He retired in 1944.
