Page five, Column 2-3OBITUARY OF AGNES BISHOP
Agnes Benita Bishop, daughter of David Maxwell and Ethel (Shaffer) Saltsgiver, was born in Union Township on July 15, 1910. She died March 21, 1986.
She was educated in rural schools and graduated from the West Union High School at the age of 16. She began her teaching career at the age of 18, in the Windsor Township School. After a year’s teaching, she was united in marriage to Clifford Bishop, on August 29, 1929. She resumed teaching in 1953, at Stoney Hill School, were she taught two years. Soon after this, she devoted much of her time to completing her college education. She received her B.A. from Upper Iowa University in 1963. Later she was to receive her M.A. from UPP Iowa. After Agnes completed work on her B. A., she taught in the Postville, Greene and Tripoli schools.
Most of her life was lived in and around West Union.
She was a 50 year member of bethel Presbyterian Church, having joined the church originally in 1925. She was past-president of the United Presbyterian Women’s Association. She was active in many aspects of the life of Bethel Presbyterian Church – was a member of Ruth Circle and, at the time of her death, was Hunger Coordinator for the local UPW group. She especially appreciated the opportunity she had a few years ago to teach some Hmong refugees, who had settled in West Union. She was a member of Stoney Hill Country Club. She was secretary of the Pleasant grove Cemetery. She gave much of her time to working with the residents of the Good Samaritan Nursing Center.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother.
She is survived by her husband, Clifford; three sisters, Vonny (Mrs. Lewis Sr.) Bishop, West Union, Ruth Alcorn, West Union, Grace (Mrs. Earl) Redmond, Northglenn, Co; six children: Vonna (Sally) (Mrs. Marvin) Buchholz, Beloit, WI, Bonna (Susie) (Mrs. Leroy) Gehring, Marion, Clarence, West Union, Harry, Rio, IL, Esther (Mrs. Dale) Sivert, Orem, UT, and Neal, Elgin; 25 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Monday, March 24, 1:30 p.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union, with the Rev. Richard Menzel officiating. Pallbearers were Michael Gehring, Jon Gehring, Dennis Gehring, Gary Bishop, Joe Bishop, Tony Buchholz, and Paul Bishop.
Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Burnham and Wood Funeral Home, West Union
