Melvin Molokken
Melvin Lewis Molokken, 80, West Union, Iowa, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, Iowa. Melvin was born on Nov. 19, 1930, in Clermont, Iowa, to Andrew and Julia (Kleppe) Molokken. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa. He attended Dover No. 6 School and served honorably in the United States Army from March 6, 1952 to February 28, 1954. Before and after his service in the army, Melvin was a milk hauler for a total of eight years.
Melvin was united in marriage to Eileen Wolfs on March 20, 1955, at First Lutheran in Ossian, Iowa. Four daughters were born to this union. Melvin was a proud farmer and he farmed up until 1989. He and his cousin, Norman Kleppe, farmed together for many years. He worked as a cattle consignor for West Union, Waukon and Decorah sale barns. He enjoyed the cattle business and his customers as well. He was a member of Clermont Legion Post 375 and Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Melvin enjoyed camping at Pulpit Rock Campground in Decorah with friends and family. He looked forward to Sunday night visits from his daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren and their families. The door was always open and he lit up with joy when family arrived each Sunday night. He looked forward to hugs and kisses from everybody when leaving. His family was especially an important part of his life. He was a good husband, father and grandfather.
Melvin and Eileen took their four daughters and son-in-laws to Norway in 1988. It was a trip of a lifetime! He enjoyed speaking Norwegian and spoke it well with the relatives in Norway. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen Molokken, West Union; four daughters, Mary Ann (Lonnie) Brekke, West Union, Roxane (Tim) Brugman, West Union, Lori (Scott) Cannon, Lisa (Britt) Dyke; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer (Ignacio) Fuentes, Jessica (Jerem) White, Justin (Abby) Brekke, Brittany (Brian) More, Christopher Brugman, John (Ann) Cannon, Thomas (Stephanie) Cannon, Kimberly (Chris) Lundgren, Cassie Cannon, Ashley Dyke, Erica Dyke; twelve great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Kyler, Kendrick, Andre, Isabella, Bailey, Hailee, Khloee, Jaxson, Brooxton, Cael, Chase and one on the way and two siblings, Edwin (Mabel) Molokken and Donna Seitz.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Tiffany Brugman; two brothers, Levi (Lydia) Molokken, Art Molokken; brother-in-law, Dale Seitz and sister-in-law, Eleanor (Molokken).
Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, from 4-7 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, West Union, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church at West Union. Pastor Rusty Phillips will officiate.
Burial will follow in the West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa, with military honors.
Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Clermont, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
