Funeral services for Shirley Alice Appleby, age 76, of Monticello, Iowa will be held at 11 AM on Thursday morning August 4 at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello is handling the arrangements.

Shirley Alice Bass was born May 22, 1935 in Fayette County near Fayette to Farrell and Helen (Nelson) Bass. She graduated from the Fayette High School in 1953. She married James Anderson. They later divorced. On April 29, 1961 Shirley married James Appleby, Sr. at Monmouth, Illinois. They made their home in Anamosa, Iowa until his death in 1990. Shirley retired in 1990 from Rockwell Collins after 37 years of service as a quality engineer in the Government Department. Shirley moved to Monticello in 1991. She enjoyed many cruises and traveling with her longtime companion Norbert Averkamp until his death in 2010. In 2010 she moved to East Towne Care Center in Independence, Iowa. Shirley was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Monticello, Iowa.

Shirley Appleby died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Appleby, Sr.; two sons, James Appleby, Jr. and John Appleby, three babies in infancy, Rhonda Anderson, Kevin Anderson, and Jerry Anderson; a sister, Beverley Cousins, and a brother, LaVerne Bass.

Shirley is survived by her four brothers, James (Mary) Bass of West Union, Richard (Alda Vae) Bass of Elk Run Heights, Robert Bass of Arlington, Iowa, and Gary (Betty) Bass of Oelwein, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. She was blessed with the loving family of her companion Norbert Averkamp, Deb (Fred) Wahl, Diane (Terry) Van Natta, and Mike Averkamp, and Norbert's three grandchildren.
