Another Clermont Pioneer Passed Away
Mrs. Jens Brorby, maiden name Martha Kjervin, was born in Hadeland, Norway, March 18, 1842, and died at her home in Clermont, February 8, 1928, at the age of eighty-five years, ten months and twenty days.Mrs. Brorby came with her parents from Norway directly to Clermont in 1868. In 1869 she was united in marriage to Jens Brorby and moved to his farm six miles east of Clermont. Here her active years were spent and a large family reared. In 1900, or two years after the death of her husband, she with the unmarried members of the family moved to Clermont, where she has since resided.
To Mr. and Mrs. Brorby were born nine children, one of whom died in early childhood, thus leaving to mourn her departure eight children, namely, Mrs. Ingebert Skarshoug of Decorah, Mrs. Tom Olson, Mrs. Oscar Lind, Mrs. Ole Peterson, Mrs. Henry Skarshoug, Miss Anna Brorby, Miss Julia Brorby and Joseph Brorby, all of Clermont and vicinity. Of the children, Mrs. Tom Olson is the oldest, and the only son, Joseph is the youngest. Besides the children there are twenty-two grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, two brothers, Andrew Kjervin of Northwood, N.D., and Hans Kjervin of Cliteral, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. Anna Tollefson of Pasadena, California, besides a large number of friends and other relatives who mourn her departure.
Mrs. Brorby has for the past fourteen years been in poor health, and though all posssible aid was sought, it all seemed in vain. During the last year she has not been able to move about any without help, but the final illness followed a light stroke which she suffered January 24th, from which she never rallied nor regained the power of speech, but it was evident to all about her, that she both heard and understood what was said to her up to a few days before her death. In Mrs. Brorby this community and the Clermont Lutheran church has lost one of its useful and loyal members. May we who remain truly honor the memory of these worthy pioneers and cherish the treasures, greater than gold, that they have bequeathed unto us.
The funeral services were held on Saturday from the home and the East Clermont Lutheran church, the pastor, Rev. G. Gunsten, officiating. Six of the grandsons were chosen to act as pall bearers namely, Oliver Skarshoug, Harold Skarshoug, Joseph and Marion Lind, and Joseph and Jens Olson.
In spite of bad roads the very large gathering and the mass of flowers gave evidence of the esteem the family and the departed one enjoys in this community.
Card of Thanks
Words cannot express our appreciation for the kind and loving services given us during the illness and death of our mother. The floral tributes were a comfort and the beautiful songs an inspiration. To these kind friends we are very grateful.
