A Mass of Christian Burial for Cletus J. Meyer, age 82, of St. Lucas, Iowa will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) November 15 at the St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. Msgr. Carl Schmitt will be the Mass celebrant with the Rev. Marvin Salz as con-celebrant. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the St. Lucas American Legion Post 691. Casket bearers will be Eric Conlon, Tim Conlon, Nick Soules, Leo Frost, Adam Shores, Wade Mittelstadt, Warren Mittelstadt, and Christopher Winter. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton, Iowa is handling the arrangements.

Cletus Joseph Meyer, son of Theodore and Helen (Balk) Meyer, was born April 8, 1924 in St. Lucas. He attended the St. Luke's Catholic Grade School for eight years. Cletus worked on the famiy farm and also for his brother-in-law, Frank Kuennen until 1941. In 1941, Cletus was drafted into the United States Army and served in Germany during World War II. Cletus had attained the rank of staff sergeant when he was honorably discharged in 1945. At that time, he returned to the family farm. On October 4, 1949, Cletus was wed to Agnes A. Schmitt at St. Luke's Catholic Church. They settled on the Meyer family farm where they raised ten children. Cletus was a lifelong dairy farmer, well-known for raising purebred Holstein cattle. He had received the Fayette County's Outstanding Dairy Farmer and Distinguished Dairyman Awards. Cletus left farming due to a broken hip in 1999. He had been a resident at the New Hampton Care Center since December 2005. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Catholic church. Cletus served on the parish council and was a fourth-degree knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of St. Isadore Council No. 8676.

Cletus Joseph Meyer died Sunday, November 12, 2006 at the New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Helen Meyer in 1990, three brothers Herbert Meyer, Fidelis Meyer, and Leo Meyer, and a sister, Elizabeth Kuennen.

Cletus is survived by his wife Agnes of New Hampton, Iowa; his children: Lee (Kathy) Meyer, Robert (Wilma) Meyer, and Tom (Connie) Meyer, all of St. Lucas, Iowa, Marlene (Wayne) Bina of LaCrescent, Minnesota, Alice (Dan) Conlon of New Hampton, Iowa, Shirley (Dean) Shores of Leland, Iowa, Mary (Bob) Kalb of Aurora, Iowa, Dorothy (Tim) Frost and Norma (Garrett) Bunn, all of Raymond, Iowa; 19 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Dietzenbach of Waucoma, Iowa.
