David Asher Ladd was born in St. Lawrence County,
New York, January 30, 1846. While still a child his
parents moved to Wisconsin and later, in 1862, they
moved to the vicinity of Oelwein. It was from this
county that he enlisted January 5, 1864 in the Federal
army and was discharged February 15, 1866. After
his discharge he came back to Fayette County and in
1871 he moved to the neighborhood of Tripoli, Iowa.
At this place on March 26, 1875 he was married to
Eliza Jane Waterman. About five years the family came
to Oelwein where they have resided ever since.
Shortly after coming to Oelwein Mr. Ladd had the
misfortune to lose one of his legs which left him a
cripple and dependent upon ministrations of his loved
ones. About two weeks ago he was taken ill and
rapidly developed pneumonia which caused his death
on January 24, 1922. Besides his companion of many
years, there remain to mourn his loss, four children;
Mrs. Mary LaPlount of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Wallace A.
Ladd of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Myrtle Davis of Des Moines,
Iowa and Erwin Ladd of Oelwein, Iowa. There are ten
grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mr. Ladd was a member of the Presbyterian Church
of Oelwein and though hindered from attendance
cause of his infirmity, he was interested in all the work
and life of the church. He passed away in the faith
and with confidence that the Lord would provide for
those of his loved ones who remain.
After brief services Thursday afternoon in Oelwein,
the body was taken to Tripoli where interment was
made in Fremont Cemetery.Oelwein Daily Register - 27 Jan 1922
