George H. Roberts 1870 - 1916 Spanish-American War veteran

- George H. Roberts was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Roberts and was born in Oran November 12, 1870.
When he was six years of age the family moved to
Hazleton. His mother died when he was eleven years
of age and his father passed away about twenty-four
years ago.
- Mr. Roberts from early manhood was a successful
solicitor and in the middle 90's he was employed by the
Oelwein Record. In June 1898 in Waterloo at the opening
of the Spanish-American war he enlisted in Company D,
49th Iowa Infantry and the regiment was located in
Jacksonville, Florida for the next three months, later for
four months in Savanah, and for four months saw service
in Cuba. May 1899 he received an honorable discharge
from the U. S. Service.
- He returned to Oelwein and resumed his work with the
Record for two years. In 1902, at Lancaster, Wisconsin, he
was united in marriage to Miss Laura Roberts and they made
their home for four year in Rock Island, Illinois where he was
a successful solicitor for a leading daily newspaper. Mrs.
Roberts died in 1906 and he left Rock Island and during the
greater part of the past ten years he has been located in
Oelwein where for a number of years he has been a
solicitor for the Register.
- He was well known in this vicinity where he passed the most
of his life and had many friends. He was of a kind and genial
disposition that attracts and had few superiors as a subscription
solicitor. He was ill about a month and was given the best of
care at the City Hospital and it was thought that he would
recover up to two day before the passing.
- He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mate Downing of Oelwein
and Mrs. J. D. Lawrence of Hazleton; a brother preceded him in death
years ago (Bruce, 1889). The last service will be held from the home
of his sister, Thursday, Rev. Donald Grant officiating. The body was
interred in the old city cemetery.
