The last services for Stephen Hewitt
whose death was referred to in Wednesday's
Register was held from the
Baptist church Thursday afternoon,
under the auspices of the Grand Army
of which he was a member. Rev. E.
L. True conducted the services, and
spoke in an appropriate manner of the
deceased who had been a faithful soldier
in the 60's.
He had been a resident of this city
but six mouths, his former home being
in Illinois. He was born in New York,
October 1, 1845, and was therefore
sixty-one years, three months and
twenty-two days of age. He leaves a
wife and two children to mourn his
loss, Mrs. Wheeler who resides near
this city, and a daughter whose home
is in Illinois. The interment is in the
Oran cemetery.
Beside his wife and two daughters
he leaves three sisters and two brothers
to mourn his loss. He was always
hard working man till disease made
such inroads upon him that he was
unable to be active. He was a brave
soldier, and received an honorable discharge
from his regiment, the Third
New York Artillery. During his last
sickness he took an interest in spiritual
things, and talked of the future
with Rev. True.. He has answered the
last roll call, and has now gone to his
reward.Oelwein Daily Register - 24 Jan 1907
