Belle Ross was the daughter of stalwart pioneers,
Samuel A. K. Ross and Angeline Malott Ross and was
born at Versailles, Ripley County, Indiana on December
25, 1851.
- When she was fifteen years of age she came with her
parents in a "Covered Wagon" to Oran Township, Fayette
County, Iowa. Here she grew to womanhood amid
pioneer hardships, taught school and on October 8, 1873
was united in marriage to Mr. Robert J. Young.
- Their new home was made on a farm in Oran township,
where in addition to operating the farm they both taught
school. One of the lovely memories Mother Young
cherished was those days when the two young school
teachers would ride together to the first school and then
the young husband would drive on to his school and when
the day's work was done he would return by the same route
and picking up his bride, make the happy trip home
together.
- To this union four children were born, all of whom have
filled useful places in life.
- After twenty years on the Oran farm they came to Oelwein.
In 1893 they made their home at the west edge of the city
near West Charles and 12th Avenue and 1901 they moved
to 310 First Avenue, NE, where Mother Young resided to
the time of her death.
- She is survived by a daughter and two sons; Mrs. Amelia
Willson of Cedar Rapids; George W. Young of Tucson,
Arizona and R. Lloyd Young of Oelewein, Iowa. Her husband
preceded her in death on February 24, 1911 and one son,
C. B. Young, died in September 1937 and a grandson,
Donald Willson, March 9, 1924.
- She is also survived by one brother, Lonnie Ross of
Los Angeles, California, by four grandsons; R. A. Willson,
of Chicago, Ill., J. L. Willson, Jr. of Lafayette, Indiana; J. C.
Willson of Hollywood, California and Robert Young, a
student in Grinnell College. There are also two great
grandchildren; Doris Jean Willson of Chicago and John'
Richard Willson of Hollywood, California, together with a
niece, Mrs. Bertha Ridler, who was her devoted nurse
through most of this last illness.
- She was a member of the W. R. C. and of the W. C. T. U.
Her father, husband and father-in-law all gave service in the
Civil War and she highly esteemed her membership in the
Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. For 40
years she has been a member of the Order of Eastern Stars
serving two years a Treasurer and many years as Chaplain.
- Funeral services were held at the Grace Methodist church
on Sunday, October 27th. Interment was made in the family
lot in Woodlawn Cemetery.Oelwein Daily Register - 28 October 1940
