Kenneth Realto Hellum

Kenneth Hellum was born near Elgin, Iowa, on Feb. 13, 1915 to John and Clara (Peterson) Hellum. He was baptized in the East Clermont Lutheran Church on April 1, 1915, and confirmed at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder, on Nov. 27, 1929. Kenneth received his education at the Vellersven School in Clayton County, Iowa. He spent his youth as a farm hand and factory worker.

Kenneth was married to Viola Peck on March 4, 1939 at her home near Ossian, Iowa, by Rev. Magelson. They moved to a farm near St. Olaf, Iowa, where he had been employed for five years. The couple had four children. They purchased a farm in the Postville area where he farmed until moving to Postville in 1971. At this time he worked as a carpenter and on road construction until retiring in 1975.

Kenneth was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, for the past 43 years, and was a member of the Senior Citizens.

After an extended illness, Kenneth died Sunday evening, June 6, 1993 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Curtis, in 1970.

He is survived by his wife Viola, three daughters, Mrs. Keith (Darlene) Johnson and Mrs. Curtis (Dorothy) Gilson all of Elgin, and Mrs. Jack (Jean) Greenwood of Carlton, Texas; twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a brother, Merlin, of Elgin.

Funeral services for Kenneth Hellum were held Wednesday, June 9, 1993 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Chuck Miller officiated. Organist was Joann Martins. Interment was at the Postville Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Muehlethaler Funeral Home, Elgin.
