Edmund Packard was born in Cattarangus county,
New York in June 1832, was married to Miss Cashta
Carpenter in February 1860, afterward moved to
Wisconsin and enlisted as a fifer in the 31st Wisconsin
infantry, serving three years. He took part in a
number of battles and was with Sherman in his march
to the sea, marched in the review at Washington and
was mustered out at Madison, Wisconsin. In 1876 he
moved to Maynard which place has since been his
home. He had been a great sufferer from cancer of the
stomach and died Sunday morning, July 28th, aged 75
years and one month, leaving an aged wife, one son
now in British Columbia and two daughters, Mrs. Louis
Cowles of this place and Mrs. J. S. Ranney of Iowa Falls, to
mourn his loss. Judge Ingersoll and wife of Oelwein and
relatives from Edgewood attended the last services. The
funeral was held at the home July 29th, Rev. Cassidy
officiating. His comrades marched as bodyguard to the
cemetery, among them we noted Hart Spears, Charles
Lewis and William Kemmer of Westgate, Mr. Parrott and
N. C. Austin of Randalia. For the fourth time since the
middle of February we have been called upon to lay at
rest an old veteran. One by one they are passing over.Oelwein Register - 31 July 1907
