MAYNARD
E. B. Snedigar was born in Benton county, Wisconsin,
October 10, 1844. With his parents he came to Iowa
when he was seven years old. In 1862 he enlisted in
the 21st Iowa and served three years during the war
of the rebellion. His record as a soldier was one to be
proud of and the members of his company have held
an annual reunion for many years. He was married in
1872 to Ellen Mitchell of Smithfield township and in
1873 moved to Maynard, which place has since been
his home. On the afternoon of March 16, 1904, while
at work with his son in the cellar, he dropped dead.
Dr. G. W. Hanes was quickly called but all efforts to
resuscitate him failed. The funeral was held at the
opera house Sunday, March 20th, Rev. Young of the
M. E. church officiating. The building was filled to
overflowing with sympathizing friends and neighbors.
The I.O.O.F. of which he was a prominent member
having charge about 50 were in line, a number present
from Oelwein, Randalia and Fayette. The floral offerings
were very beautiful. He leaves a wife and two children,
his aged mother who was unable to be present, two
brothers and three sisters beside a host of friends to
mourn the loss of one who will be sadly missed. For
twelve years he had been postmaster and given general
satisfaction. As secretary of the school board and also
the I.O.O.F. his work was always well done and his place
will be hard to fill. His daughter, Mrs. H. E. White of Lawton,
Oklahoma, arrived Saturday. Three of his comrades were
present at the funeral, their old company flag being wrapped
about the casket during the service. At the close the
procession was formed and the remains laid to rest in the
cemetery here.
