Clarissa A. (Rathbun) Slocum 1838-1920

Clarissa A. Rathbun was born in Castile, New York.
April 8, 1838. At the age of 22 years she united with
the First Baptist Church of Castile, NY. In 1860 she
was united in marriage to Wallace W. Slocum. One son
was born to them. Lloyd W. Slocum, now of Waterloo,
Iowa.
- In 1876 she removed to Oelwein, Iowa where she
continued to reside. When the organization of the
Regular Baptist Church was effected in Oelwein she
was elected Clerk and served in that capacity. She
was interested in temperance work and was president
of their organization for several years. She was an
honored member of the Baptist Church at the time of
her death, which occurred April 16, 1920.
- Mrs. Slocum was an active member of the Woman's
Relief Corps and was a person who took a lively
interest in whatever was intended to lift up humanity.
- Her son Lloyd remains to mourn her loss and will ever
hold her in fond remembrance. She was a godly
mother. She is also survived by one brother, Mr. G. D.
Rathbun of Fayette, Iowa and by one nephew, D. C.
Rathbun of Spokane, Wash., and two nieces, Mrs.
Lamberson of Silver Springs, NY and Mrs. Mohr of
Alexandria, SD.
- Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church
Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. H. Gillet and
interment in Woodlawn cemetery.
