William O. Sayles 1833-1914 Civil War Veteran

- William Oney Sayles was born in Manlius, Onondaga
county, New York, September 22, 1833. Died at Fairbank
Iowa, December 28, 1914. Age 81 years 3 months and 6
days.
- When 8 years of age he, with his parents, came to
Solan, McHenry county, Illinois. Here he spent his youth
and received his education. When twenty-one years of
age the fall of 1854, he came to Fayette county, Iowa.
- In 1856 he was united in marriage to Lovina Carpenter.
Four children were born to them; Mrs. Jennette Winkler of
Peoria, Illinois; Mrs. Georgiana Westgate, who passed away
in 1881, leaving two daughters Vine and Nina a baby who
has since lived with her grandparents, William O. of
Oelwein and Mrs. Adella Johnson of Westgate.
- Mr. and Mrs. Sayles moved onto a farm near Oelwein and
began farming which occupation he followed until 1862
when Mr. Sayles enlisted in Co. F First Iowa Cavalry at
Independence. Was mustered in a Dubuque, the regiment
joining the army of the west. He took part in the battles of
Princeton, Camden, Spoonville, Little Rock, Elkins Ford,
Moreau River, Jenkins Ferry and others. Also the Red River
expedition and at the close of the war went with Gen. Custer
to Alexandria, La. and thence into Texas as far as Houston, He
was musted out at Austin, Texas in March 1866, took passage
on a steamer to New Orleans and was discharged at
Davenport a short time later, having faithfully followed the old
flag through three years of warfare.
- His wife having died in 1863 he returned to Fayette county
with his little children again took up the occupation of farming.
In the spring of 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E.
Bane. Two children born to this union. Ethvle who died in
infancy and Mrs. Donna Emmons of Burr Oak. In 1872 he was
united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Lord. One child was born to them,
Mrs. Mary D. Fox of Fairbank, at whose home both he and his wife
passed away.
- He leaves one son and four daughters who were all
present at the last services.
