Grace Viola (Stahr) Durnan
Grace Viola (Stahr) Durnan was born March 30, 1919, near West Union, Iowa. She was the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Blockhus) Stahr. Grace was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, West Union. She attended country school through 8th grade near Brainard, Iowa. On June 16, 1937 she was united in marriage to Leo Durnan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, Iowa. To this union 19 children were born. Grace died on April 6, 2011, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center West Union, of natural causes. She was 92 years, 7 days of age.
Grace was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church Clermont, Iowa. Grace was a faithful and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed canning, sewing, gardening, and spending time with her family. Grace was known as a gracious host to all who came to her home, and everyone was welcome at her table. She was famous for her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. She is remembered for her generosity, patience, cheerful disposition, and gentle nature.
Grace is survived by her children, Charles (Margie), Cosa Grande, Arizona, Joseph (Jan), Elma, Iowa, Mike, Arlington, Iowa, Jim (Kathy), Thomaston, Georgia, Mark (Kate), Elgin, Luke (Kathy), Walker, Iowa, John (Mary), Thomaston, Georgia, Paul, (Rosie) Clermont, Iowa, Frank (Sylvia), Globe, Arizona, Regina (Terry) Ellerman, Quincy, Illinois, Tony (Tammy), Adel, Iowa, Lucy Durnan, Clermont, Rebecca (Mark) Skretta, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Leo (Shirley), Elgin, Iowa, Martha (Steve) Slagle, Algona, Iowa, Veronica (Kenny) Boyer, Hawkeye, Marie Landsgard, West Union, 86 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three brothers, Tommy Stahr, Pete Stahr, George Stahr, one sister, Edna Stahr, two daughters Mary Turner and Grace "Sue" Walker, two grandchildren, Lisa Marie Durnan, Nathan James Rasmussen, one step-grandchild Dave Dales, and one daughter-in-law Bonnie Durnan.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 11, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa. The Rev. Dale Rausch will be the celebrant.
Burial will follow in the St. Peter Catholic Cemetery in Clermont, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2011, from 2-7 p.m. at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elgin, Iowa, with a scripture service at 7 p.m. and one hour before mass at the church on Monday, April 11, 2011.
