James Earnshaw 1843-1920 Civil War Veteran

- James Ernshaw, who for more than fifty years has
been a respected citizen of Oelwein and vicinity, died
at his home in this city, 43 Sixth Street N., Friday,
November 19, 1920.
- He was born in Yorkshire, England, July 12, 1843.
He came with his father to America in 18_5, living for
a time in New York state, later moving to Kane county,
Illinois, where he lived until the commencement of
the Civil War, when true to his adopted county, he
bravely went forth and took part in a trying campaign
and hard fought engagement to save the dignity of
the Stars and Stripes .
- He enlisted August 8, 1862 in Co. E. 127th Ill.
Volunteer Infantry. He served with distinction until
August 21, 1865, when he was honorably discharged.
He was in the Western Army which participated in the
siege of Vicksburgh.
- November 17, 1865 he was married to Miss Lydia
Fallows. April 27, 1870 they moved to Iowa and
purchased a farm in Oran township where they resided
until April 1900 when they moved to the home where
they have since lived.
- Besides the faithful and devoted wife there remain
to mourn their loss, one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Watkins
of this city and two grandchildren and one brother,
William Ernshaw of Marion, Kansas; also Mrs. Addie
McChesney of Ogden, Utah, whom they took to their
hearts and home when she was but a little more than a
year of age; and that she feels for them the devotion
of a daughter is evidenced by the fact, that she has
been with them during the last few weeks of his sickness.
- For many years he was a member of the Grand Army of
the Republic and had a strong fraternal love for any old
comrade. The six comrades who bore the casket to its
last resting place were C. C. Van Wirt, Charles Wright, C. W.
Baldwin, Elijah Bond, Phillip Potter and George Moore.
- The last services were held from the Baptist church
Sunday, attended by a concourse of relatives and friends.
The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. C.
Clark.
