George Kint 1838-1920 Civil War Veteran

George Kint was born in Williams
county, Ohio, December 2, 1838, and
passed away, after a short illness at
his home in Oelwein, August 16, 1920,
in his eighty-second year. With his
parents he came to Iowa in 1847 and
they located at Coytown, Buchanan
county.
He enlisted in the Union army in
1861, and was a memher of the
Twelfth Iowa infantry, serving with
the famous Hornets Nest Brigade.
He was wounded in the battle of
Fort Donaldson and later discharged
from the service in consequence of
wounds received at the battle of Shiloh.
- On February 11, 1863, he was united
in marriage to Eliza Jane Sparks.
They made their home .in Coytown
till 1873. when they moved to a farm
'three and a half miles southwest of
Oelwein. -In 1892 they moved to Oelwein
which has since been the family home.
- He is survived by his wife, seven
children, twelve grandchildren, one
great grandson and a sister, Mrs. B.
Young who resides in this city. The
children are: J. D. Kint, T. E. Kint
and A. M. Kint, residing in Oelwein:
J. W. Kint, Los Angeles, Cal.; 0. E.
Kint,' Helena, Mont.; E. 0. Kint, of
Lusk, Wyo. and Beulah Tunison, who
resides at the family home. All were
present at the last service except
O. E. Kint.
- Mr. Kint was active in G. A. R. circles
thoroughly enjoyed the district, state
and national reunions of that patriotic
association. He was not only willing to
serve his county in his young days, but
also in times of peace he served his
city and country. He was assessor in
Buchanan and Fayette counties for
several terms. At different times he acted
as census enumerator and also filled the
positions of constable and city marshall
of Oelwein the last time during the World
War when he was 80 years of age.
- Services were held from the home Thursday
August 19, conducted by Mrs. Mary M. Smith
of Cedar Rapids, who read the service of the
Christian Science church of which he was a
member. He was laid at rest in the Woodlawn
