Robert J. Young 1844-1911 Civil War Veteran

Robert John Young was born in London, England,
November 15, 1844 and died in Oelwein, Iowa, February 24,
1911 after an illness extending over a year, the last nine
weeks of which he was confined to his home. At the age of
four years he came with his parents to the United States and
they located in Brooklyn, New York. Following his mother's
death a few years later he made his home with an uncle til he
was twelve years of age when he came to Buchanan county,
Iowa. He was educated in the Brooklyn, N.Y. schools and those
of this section.
- In 1862 when eighteen years of age he enlisted at
Independence in Company F First Iowa Cavalry and was mustered
in at Dubuque, the regiment joining the Army of the West. He
took part in the battles of Princton, Camden, Spoonville, Little Rock,
Elkins Ford, Moreau River, Jenkins Ferry and others, also the Red
River expedition and at the close of the war went with General Custer
to Alexandria, La. and thence into Texas as far as Houston. He was
mustered out at Austin, Texas in March 1866, took passage on a
steamer to New Orleans and was discharged at Davenport a short time
later, having faithfully followed the old flag through three years of
warfare.
- Returning to Fayette county Mr. Young engaged in farming and
in 1878 was united in marriage to Miss Belle Ross, a native of Indiana
and a daughter of Samuel A. K. Ross and Angeline (Malott) Ross. Mr.
and Mrs. Young located on a farm in Oran township where four children
were born to them, all of whom together with the wife and mother
survive him. The children are Mrs. James Wilson of Oelwein; George a
member of the U. S. Navy; Clarence B. of Des Moines; Robert Lloyd of
Oelwein who has been engaged with his father in the insurance business.
- Short services were held from the home at 1:30 pm Tuesday afternoon
and the last services were held from Grace M. E. church at 2 o'clock.
