George A. Fish was born in the town
of Masseua, St. Lawrence county, New
York, in 1830. In 1836 his 'parents
came to DuPage Co., Ill. From here
he went to Harvard Junction, McHenry
Co., and vicinity and remained until
the war of the Rebellion, when he
enlisted in the 95th Ill. Vol. Regt., in
1862, as private, and afterwards received
promotion to 1st Lieut, of 47th
Alabama Regt. He was in active service
3 years and 5 mouths; was seriously
injured in the right leg during the
last days of the battle at Fort Blakely,
Alabama. At the close of the war he
returned to Harvard Junction, his
former home, and remained there for
many years in the mercantile business.
In 1875 he suffered serious loss from
fire. Removing to Chicago he engaged
in commission business for more than
8 years, successfully. Finding his
health was failing he sold out-his' business
and came to Oelwein, Iowa, to
retire from active business and spend
the remaiader of his days -with his
wife and son, and occupying his time
in improving and beautifying a, pleasant
home. That his health was steadily
failing was too apparent to the family,
and this winter was becoming
more visible. He was not very well
several days, although he accompanied
his family to Church January 13th,
and was there taken with a colic pain.
He came home growing worse and sent
immediately for a doctor. Continuing
to grow rapidly worse other physicians
were summoned. But to no avail. Despite
their efforts he suffered untold agony and
Tuesday, nature succumbed to the
terrible disease, which was pronounced
stricture of the bowels. He expressed a
desire to remain with his family, but said
if his time had come he was ready to meet
the call. George A. Fish was an honest,
honorable and christian man, and was held
in high esteem by a large circle of friends
who are shocked and grieved at his sudden
death. Kindest sympathy is expressed for
the bereaved family.

—We desire to extend our sincere,
thanks to the friends, and members of
the Post, who kindly assisted us and
expressed their deep sympathy in the
hour of our trying affliction in the loss
of our beloved husband and father. -
